Figuring Out If You Need To Have The Surface Sanded And Refinished

Before you can begin the process of refinishing hardwood floors, you will first need to ascertain whether or not the wood is in satisfactory condition. If you are unclear about this, there are a few things that you can do to figure out if you need to have the surface sanded and refinished or if you just need to replace the wood. Here are some of the things that you may do.

  1. Examine the Situation for Any Significant Damage: If you are unclear about the state of your hardwood floors, you should invite some friends over and ask them to examine the floors for you. If there is any damage to the floor, this would be easy to spot; however, if there is no damage, it can be trickier to determine if the flooring needs  hardwood refinishing  or not; however, there are a few things you can do to help you figure it out.
  2. Search for Scratches: You might check to see if there are any scratches, and if there are any, they need to be no bigger than your pinky nail if there are any at. If after having a hardwood floor resurfaced it still appears as though someone has been dragging their nails across it, then you will most likely need to have it refinished again.
  3. Examine the Area for Water Damage: The moisture in the air is absorbed by the hardwood floors. In situations where there is an excessive amount of moisture in the air, the wood may expand as a result. On the other hand, situations in which there is not enough water or moisture may also result in damage. If it has been at least two years after you had your hardwood flooring installed and you are unsure of the quality of your flooring, try running some water over it. This will help you determine the condition of your flooring. If there is no evidence of damage and the water beads up when it is dropped on the floor, then you should probably get it refinished.
